Our Story and Symbol

Boarding school for Indigenous students twelve years and older from remote communities

HomeOur Story and Symbol

The College symbol is traditional, and is peculiar to the desert Aborigines of central Australia.

The Yirara College symbol is a traditional design unique to the Desert Aboriginal peoples of Central Australia. It is proudly displayed throughout the College—at our entrance, on uniforms, and across our community—representing our identity, history, and connection to culture.
Before adopting the symbol, permission was respectfully sought from major Aboriginal communities across Central Australia. Elders supported its use, recognising its meaning and significance. This careful and inclusive approach reflects the strong relationships that continue to shape Yirara today.
The symbol represents a campsite, with a man and woman at either end and a central fire. Traditionally, it signifies a place of gathering, rest, and connection—a stopping point in a journey. At Yirara, it reflects our College as a place of belonging, learning, and transition, where young people are supported as they prepare for their future.

It is the emblem of Yirara College and may be seen throughout the College – at the front entrance, on uniforms, cards and flags. The symbolism is not secret, but permission was asked from all the major Aboriginal communities in central Australia before Yirara adopted it.

Our History

Yirara College was established in 1973 as a government secondary residential college, created to support Aboriginal students from remote communities across Central Australia. Its early purpose was to provide access to education and support students in navigating new opportunities beyond their local communities.
In 1991, the Northern Territory Government invited expressions of interest for the future governance of the College. At that time, Aboriginal families and communities strongly expressed their desire for Yirara to become a Christian school under the care of Finke River Mission (FRM). This reflected the trust already established and the value placed on faith-based education within the community.
Today, Yirara continues to honour that legacy—building on decades of connection, partnership, and shared commitment to the education and wellbeing of young people.

Our Name

The name Yirara comes from the Arrernte language, referring to a creek located between the College and Amoonguna. The name anchors the College to its place, culture, and community, reflecting our deep connection to the land on which we learn and live.

Yirara College remains a place of journey, belonging, and growth—where culture, history, and education come together to shape strong futures.
